Discovering Jilean Shain Taghap’s Gift at Age Two
Diocelle Ocmeja Taghap, Jilean’s mother, first noticed something special when her daughter was still a toddler. During the media tour, she recalled how Jilean’s natural talent became apparent at an early age. Reporter: Kailan niyo po na-discover na may boses at talento ang anak ninyo?
Diocelle: “Nag-start po talaga siya noong 2 years old pa lamang. Nakitaan ko siya na may talent sa singing. Kasi noong time na ’yun, marunong siyang mag-humming—sikat kasi ’yun noong time na ’yun, ‘Let It Go.’ Memorize na rin niya ’yung buong kanta at 2 years old. Bihira ’yun sa ganoong edad. Sabi ko, kakaiba, kaya niya kumanta sa ganoong edad niya.”
Rather than applying pressure, Diocelle nurtured Jilean’s interest through play. Once school began, local competitions provided a natural next step. Remarkably, the young singer continued to excel and often finished each contest on top.
Diocelle: “Noong nag-start na siyang mag-school, doon na nagsimula ang mga competitions—school competitions, sa province ng Bohol. Pinapasali ko na siya, at palagi naman siyang nananalo. Doon na rin siya lalong na-train nang husto.”
The Accidental Upload That Introduced Her to the World
Meanwhile, the viral clip that would change everything came from a BAPSEA (Bohol Association of Private Schools Elementary Administrators) competition. Interestingly, Diocelle told Net25 and other outlets that the song choice was entirely her daughter’s.
Reporter: Bakit ‘Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo’ ang napiling kanta, at inasahan niyo bang mag-va-viral?
Diocelle: “Una niyang gustong kantahin, ‘Nosi Balasi.’ Sabi ko, tapos ka na doon, dito naman sa ‘Banal na Aso.’ Pinakinggan niya, sabi niya, ‘Ay, gusto ko ’yun, Mami. Gusto niya ’yung tono.’ Nanalo siya sa area level. Hindi ko muna pino-post kasi may provincial level pa. Pagka-province level, nanalo siya, tsaka ko in-upload.”
In truth, Diocelle never meant to launch a career with the video. Her original intention was simply to use the app’s video effects.
Diocelle: “’Yung pagka-post ko, hindi talaga intended. Ginagamit ko lang ang TikTok kasi may effects ang video. At ayun, na-post ko. Nag-viral na. Na-overwhelmed pa ako. Parang hindi kapani-paniwala kasi hindi ko naman inaasahan na ganoon. Wala naman akong intensyong magpasikat.”
Consequently, the numbers kept climbing: 14.1 million views and 1.6 million likes on TikTok, followed by another 7.7 million when content creator Nephi Acaling shared the clip on Facebook. At the Manila press conference, reporters tried to draw out the quiet girl behind the powerful voice. Even so, her answers remained short but heartfelt.
Reporter: Jilean, how do you feel now that your songs are viral and many people recognize you?
Jilean: “Okay. Happy and excited.”
Jilean Shain Taghap delivered the performance that launched millions of views.
Reporter: What’s your message to all your fans?
Jilean: “Okay.”
Afterward, her mother explained the simple joy that drives the young singer.
Diocelle: “Tinatanong niya ako, ‘Bakit tayo pupunta ng Manila?’ Sagot ko, ‘Kasi nagustuhan nila ang performance mo.’ Sabi niya, ‘Ah, so the people are happy again.’ Kaya raw gusto niyang kumanta—masaya raw siya kapag nakangiti ang mga tao.”
When the subject of stage fright came up, her confidence surprised everyone.
Reporter: Do you feel nervous before a performance? What’s running in your mind?
Jilean: “No. Happy.”
A Grandmother’s Dream Lives On Through Jilean Shain Taghap
Beyond the cheerful victories, music runs deep in the family. Diocelle’s own mother was a champion singer in the 1980s. Sadly, Diocelle lost her mother during high school and eventually stopped singing too. Today, watching Jilean on stage, she sees a dream finally fulfilled.
Reporter: Mayroon po ba sa pamilya ninyo na musically inclined?
Diocelle: “Ang mother ko talaga, champion siya sa lahat ng contests. May sinalihan siyang TV show noon, noong 1980s. Noong namatay ang mama ko, hindi na ako na-follow up, wala nang nag-train sa akin. Nang manganak ako, siya na—ako na ang nag-train sa kanya.”
At that moment, Diocelle paused, visibly moved by the memory.
Diocelle: “Naiiyak talaga ako noon. Kung sana naabutan pa ito ng mama ko—ito ang pangarap niya para sa akin. At least natupad naman sa apo niya. Ganito pala ang pakiramdam. Ito ang ultimate dream.”
Keeping Childhood Intact
Despite the media whirlwind, Jilean’s life is still mostly toys, games, and school. In fact, Diocelle estimates that 90% of her time belongs to childhood.
Diocelle: “Actually, 90% kabataan. Tingnan mo nga ’yan, o, may dala-dalang toys. Tuwing kumakanta siya, may toys siyang dala-dala.”
Beyond singing, Jilean herself listed her hobbies with a grin.
Reporter: Aside from singing, what else do you like doing?
Jilean: “Pickleball. And online games too.”
At the same time, education remains at the centre of her daily routine. Jilean is a Grade 3 student at the Child and Arts Academy, Inc. To keep her on track, the family uses DepEd live credits and online modules.
Diocelle: “Supportive ako. Lahat ng absences ko sa school, nakalaan para sa kanya. Hindi ako umaabsent kahit may lagnat ako—bahala na doon sa opisina. Sinasamahan ko sila kapag may mga event.”

Perhaps the most endearing moment of the press conference came when Jilean revealed her future ambitions.
Jilean: “Gusto ko pong maging doktor, Mama.”
Diocelle: “Tapos paano ’yung pagiging singer mo?”
Jilean: “Kakantahan ko po ’yung mga bata… malulunasan ang mga bata.”
With a smile, Diocelle summed it up: “Gusto niya doktor daw siya na kumakanta.”

Looking ahead, new music is already in the works. Diocelle confirmed that an original inspirational song titled “The Gratitude Song” has been prepared.
